Empire Ranch Golf Course is a Public, 27 hole golf facility located in Carson City, Nevada, The course has three 9-hole courses, they are The Sierra Nine, The Comstock Nine, and The River Nine. These nines can be combined to form three different 18 hole combinations.
Cary Bickler was the course designer. Empire ranch Golf Course first opened for play in 1997.
The course is located on the banks of the Carson River in an environmentally-protected area and is inhabited by ducks, geese and other types of waterfowl. The three courses have been given names similar to their surroundings. The Blue Course is called "The Sierra" because its backdrop is the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The Yellow Course is called "River," with several holes resting on the banks of the Carson River, and the Red Course is known as "The Comstock" with the decaying remains of a mining facility nearby.
The courses are links-style designs with water coming into play on all but three holes. Many of the greens and tees are elevated and the greens are sloped and/or undulating and fast. There are several sand bunkers sprinkled throughout the course.

The sand traps are like concrete. Sand traps in this area are all bad due to the high afternoon winds blowing the sand away. These traps are more like clay than sand. If you raked them you made a bigger mess than leaving it alone. This is winter conditions but I see no way it would be any better in the summer after watering all night
